Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Nicobar Islands be visited?

The Nicobar Islands are not open to visiting foreigners, whether scholars or tourists. Even Indian citizens need a special permit -which is granted only rarely.

Have the Nicobar island been badly hit by the 26 December 2004 Tsunami?

Because of the isolation imposed on the islands by the Indian authorities, very little hard information and publicity has reached the outside world regarding the situation in the islands. The official ban on visiting foreigner (and even Indian) journalists to the islands was even more strictly enforced after the catastrophe than before. Official figures tend to be under-estimates and highly unreliable.

Because of the geographical closeness of the islands to the centre of the tsunami and their low elevation above sea level, they have in fact suffered at least as many deaths as northern Sumatra in relation to population size.
